Quite a dramatic domestic genre piece, a young girl at her toilette by a Continental painter working between the wars. The wonderful detail in the Chinese vase and the classical roundels behind are clever, but the black drapery in the fore ground is the artist simply showing off. A large and serious academic work–possibly the artist’s daughter–there certainly seems to be an intimacy between the painter and subject.
The gilt gesso frame is period but needs some attention, the painting itself is in excellent original condition
